The Gap Band formed in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967 around brothers Ronnie, Charlie and Robert Wilson, sons of a Pentecostal minister; their name comes from Tulsa's Greenwood, Archer and Pine streets. After relocating to Los Angeles and signing with Mercury under producer Lonnie Simmons, they became one of the defining funk/R&B acts of the early 1980s with hits like 'You Dropped a Bomb on Me' and 'Early in the Morning,' and tracks like 'Outstanding' went on to become some of the most sampled records in hip-hop.
