Recorded at Blackwing Studios in London's Borough district on a modest 8-track desk, Speak & Spell was largely written and driven by Vince Clarke, with producer Daniel Miller adding an ARP 2600 synth and sequencer (bought secondhand from Elton John's touring rig) to lock down the album's crisp, percussive electronic pulse. Miller aimed to capture the 'atmosphere and vibe' of the band's live shows rather than copy existing electronic acts, and the whole group tested rough mixes by playing cassettes in engineer Eric Radcliffe's car. It was the only Depeche Mode album to feature Clarke, who left for Yazoo shortly after release, having grown uneasy with the band's rising fame; Martin Gore stepped up as the group's principal songwriter from A Broken Frame onward.
