British new wave duo formed in 1980 by Scottish vocalist Annie Lennox and English multi-instrumentalist/producer Dave Stewart, both former members of the Tourists, a Peterborough post-punk band that split that year after two moderately successful albums. Lennox and Stewart, who had also been a couple, decided in a hotel room in Wagga Wagga, Australia to continue as a stripped-down duo, taking the name Eurythmics from the Dalcroze eurhythmics music-education method Lennox had studied as a child. Their 1981 debut In the Garden sold poorly, but the synth-pop breakthrough Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983) made them global stars, followed by Touch (1983), Be Yourself Tonight (1985), Revenge (1986), Savage (1987) and We Too Are One (1989) before the duo split in 1990.
