Formed by school friends Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst in Crawley, West Sussex in 1976 (first as Malice, then Easy Cure before shortening to The Cure in 1978), the band signed to Chris Parry's Fiction Records and evolved from jagged post-punk pop on Three Imaginary Boys (1979) into the bleak, minor-key sound of the 'Pornography trilogy' (Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography, 1980-82) that helped define gothic rock, before Smith steered the band toward polished, melodic hits later in the decade with The Head on the Door and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Smith has remained the band's sole constant member through numerous lineup changes.
