The Egyptian Lover (Greg Broussard, Los Angeles) emerged from the Uncle Jamm's Army DJ crew before founding his own label, Egyptian Empire Records, in 1984 to release TR-808-built electro-rap singles and albums under his own control. His debut LP On the Nile (1984) included 'Egypt, Egypt,' a foundational West Coast electro/breakdance anthem, and he followed with One Track Mind (1986) and Filthy (1988) -- the latter making him the first rap artist signed to Priority Records. Broussard's productions leaned on the Roland TR-808, Jupiter-8, SH-101 and SVC-350 vocoder, tracked entirely on analog gear with no MIDI sequencing, a hands-on approach he has continued to use in performance. He cited Kraftwerk, Afrika Bambaataa's 'Planet Rock,' Man Parrish's 'Hip-Hop Be Bop,' Prince and Zapp as direct influences on his sound.
